BRIEF HISTORY
OF
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ACADEMY OF DANCALAN, INC.
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ACADEMY OF DANCALAN, INC. was founded on June, 1954 by Rev. Fr. Bernard Callanan, a Columban Missionary. Three years after Recognition No. 99 series 57 (to be exact April 27, 1957) was granted by the government. Although a sectarian parochial high school, this welcomes non-Catholic students who take Religion as a subject needed by any Christians; however they are free to attend or not the religious activities of the church.
During school year 1954-55 few students from Dancalan and neighboring barangays were enrolled. This school was opened to the first year and second year students only. The first graduation was on April, 1957 with only twenty four students surviving, the enrollment continuously increased every year.
Directors who are parish priests at the same time come and go. At the start they belonged to the society of St. Columban. Each director left memories such as building, classroom and above all spiritual formation. Now, we have a Filipino priest as director.
After several years of existence, many changes have taken place just like the additional classrooms and renovation of buildings. However, the tragic fire on April 12, 1987 razed the school to the ground. Out of the five buildings and twenty classrooms, only two were left. With our energetic director, Rev. Fr. Patrick Hurley, classrooms were ready at the beginning of the school year 1987-88, although the main building that consists the office of the principal and cashier, the faculty room, library, CAT office, clinic, etc. was built the following summer. On September 18, 1988 the new ICA was blessed.
The school is proud to have opened the Learning Center to small kids. Before, this was just a temporary room inside the school campus and later due to lack of classrooms of the high school, it was transferred to the space under the convent. With the initiative and resourcefulness of the Parish Pastoral Council, a permanent classroom was constructed right inside the school campus. Now, there is a separate building near the church. Another ICA pre-school is also operating in Tabu, Ilog, Negros Occidental.
Having belonged to the Department of Education (DepEd), the school joins now in the different cultural and athletic competitions and we are proud to say that our players and participants in the cultural contests have reached as far as the provincial level. There was even a time when our chess player qualified for the Regional Meet. Due to the training exposure, our students enjoy many scholarships in college.
The alumni have played important role in the improvement of the school. They are proud to have constructed the shed from the gate to the second year building. This was put up through the efforts and initiative of the officers and other members of the ICA Alumni Association.
School year 1997-1998 is marked with the turnover of Rev. Fr. John Doohan, a Columban priest to Rev. Fr. Jose Gerson P. Te-ad, a Filipino priest. When the term of Rev. Fr. Jose Gerson P. Te-ad ended, Rev. Fr. Fernando E. Villanueva, Jr. took over as a Director on May, 2006 to date. The resourcefulness and initiative of these directors have led to the realization of many unfulfilled dreams for Immaculate Conception Academy of Dancalan, Inc.
In the succeeding years, the students, parents and teachers witnessed the construction of the roof of the stage and today everybody enjoys the beauty of watching a school program in spite of the heavy rain. This was made possible through the efforts of the SAO and the support of students and parents.
On September, 2008, the staff and students from Aquinas College, Perth, Western Australia had their first Immersion Program and they were warmly welcomed by our school community. Their presence was such a blessing and a source of inspiration. With them we believe that “From little things, big things grow”.
Through the efforts of the soliciting committee, the alumni, our Australian friends and Dr. Rinly R. Gecosala, the noble dream of the school to construct additional classrooms is now a reality. As of now, the construction of the second storey in the fourth year building is still on-going.
Some of the poor but deserving students enjoy a full scholarship through the different scholarship foundations in the school namely: Dr. Rinly R. Gecosala Scholarship Foundation, Callanan Scholarship Foundation, and Carrera Scholarship Foundation. The support of the government through DepEd’s FAPE/ESC Program has been a big help to our students and to their parents. More than 90% of our students are ESC grantees.
Starting June 2009, the names of the class sections were changed from letters to the names of the saints to inspire the students of the virtues of the holy persons and to change the grouping to a heterogeneous one. Many clubs and organizations were also established to help the students discover and develop his/her talents and skills.
Another significant improvement in the school recently is the internet connection which is really a great help in upgrading the academic instructions and enhancing the skills in information technology. ICA now is a Wi-fi Zone.
The school is committed to the service of educating the youth, most especially in the total development of a person. ICA is now on its 58th year of existence and is becoming stronger in spite the challenges she has encountered. With the moral values she has inculcated to the students, she will continue to touch lives for Gods glory and bring myriads of young ones to Him.
